RVCE students set off for US with UAV

It’s lightweight, it flies and can be used in surveillance and the credit for making it goes to students of R V College of Engineering, who are now all set to display their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at the SAE Aero-design Challenge East-2011 at Georgia, USA.

Team Yoma, as the students call themselves, is excited to participate in the event spread over three days from April 29 to May 1.

The students will enter their flying machine in the micro-class category and are confident about making it to the top five due to its performance. The UAV, weighing about a kg, runs on an electric motor and can fly for close to five minutes. It can also rise to a height of 100 feet and has a transmitter with a range of about 2 kms.

“The micro UAV that will be flown in the event has been under construction for more than a year now and can carry three times its own weight. So we are extremely confident about clearing the inspection by Boeing and Lockheed Martin and also securing a position among the top five,” says Kiran Doddigarla, one of the team members. The others are Naveen B.L. (captain), Deepak Madhysta, Moghilan T.R. Mrutyunjaya Jali, Harishit M.B. and Shahanawaz Sagar.

Faculty adviser R.S. Kulkarni, who is accompanying the team, says the college has been working on various aeromodels for the last three years. “We were the first from the city to participate in an international competition three years ago. The micro light UAV which the students have now developed can do video recording in addition to its other functions as it has a facility to mount a camera,” he explains.
