It was a platform provided for them to clear their doubts, misconceptions and future prospects and students made the best use of it.

Right from course curriculum to career opportunities, The Hindu Education Plus and ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education's counselling meet for B. Tech Aspirants on ‘Engineering as a career option' held at FAPCCI here on Friday, provided all the information to students and parents.

Experts and academicians disseminated information pertaining to fee structure, student intake, internship programmes, infrastructure etc at IFHE.

While, parents were keen to learn about career options in different engineering streams for their wards, students sought information on new trends and possibilities.

Engineering was not just about computer, electrical, electronics, communications or conventional streams. With the advent of mechatronics, robotics, hydraulics, bio-mechanical, electromagnetic engineering and others aspects, engineering today offered vast options for students to specialise in different subjects and make a prosperous career, said Damodar Reddy, a faculty member of IFHE, a deemed university. Mr. Reddy explained about infrastructure and benefits for students at IFHE, saying the self-financing institution offers a 38-week unique internship programme for students. As part of the internship, students will be made to work along with social organisations and get exposed to industry environment and training in soft skills.

“All these aspects enhance the placement potential of a student, besides providing academic flexibility. The institution has already tied-up with different organisations for these internship programmes and next year we are planning for international tie ups, enabling students to work abroad,” said Mr. Reddy. Though, most students queried about prospects in computer science, communications and electrical engineering streams, experts informed that irrespective of the choice, engineering provides enough opportunities for students. Aspects like bio-mechanical, nano technology, mechatronics etc, make mechanical engineering an important engineering stream and salaries are on par with IT, communications or networking specialists, said G. Suresh Kumar from the Mechanical Engineering department. Today civil engineering deals with waste water management, geotechnical and soil mechanics, building structures above water, transportation and traffic control systems. All these issues are important in daily life and there are enough opportunities, provided students work with desire and excel, said A. Chandrasekhar from Civil Engineering department.

IFHE collects Rs. 80,000 per semester and concessions up to 50 per cent are offered for merit students. The student intake is restricted to 60 per batch and courses are offered in civil, computer science, electrical and electronics, electronics and communications and mechanical engineering.

Students seeking admissions should produce either AIEEE or, IITJEE or any state-level entrance examinations like EAMCET, KCET 2011 rank cards.

Ajit Kumar Jain (Computer Science), D.V. Nair (Electrical Engineering) and Kishore Kumar (electrical and communications engineering) also spoke.
